Hydrogen
Everyone can get excited about the potential use of hydrogen as a fuel source. After all, hydrogen gas when combined with oxygen from the atmosphere produces pure water and yields the release of energy that can be utilized to propel automobiles and drive industrial processes and produce electricity. If commercially feasible, this would be a clean energy source without any greenhouse gases resulting from the combustion of the fuel.
Commercialization of hydrogen as a fuel source is limited primarily by the cost and environmental impact of today’s technology employed to capture hydrogen. Much of today's industrial hydrogen is produced via electrolysis of water. This process consumes a tremendous amount of electricity, and today the production of that electricity requires burning traditional fossil fuels and the emission of environmentally damaging gases associated with the burning of traditional fuel sources, negatively offsetting the benefits of burning the hydrogen once it is captured.
